160 - St Patrick's day again

πΉπ Bangkok is hot all year round but as we get to the end of March it is really starting to warm up further and humidity increases though it is far from HK levels! As you head into April you arrive in the very hot season here and Thai New Year of Songkran, coinciding this year with Easter.
Monday was Bitcoin Satoshi Meetup - this time in Margarita Storm (all renovated upstairs) - it was also St Patrick's day and so it was nice to celebrate that with such an interesting and international crowd.
Midweek, V and I headed over to Wat Arun. First stop was one of her favourite cafes at Sanam Chai. Then the 5THB shuttle boat over to Wat Arun. It is a superbly maintained site - very popular with the tourists who love to come along, dressed up as royalty in Thai Traditional Dress with their personal photographer in tow!
Thursday was the Equinox and I went to see BoB Space in their new location in Ekkamai. This is a fabulous space and just a few mins walk from the BTS. If you are serious about Bitcoin, be sure to pass by or join in one of the BitDev meetups that they support, also in Chiang Mai.
We have been rather busy this week. With the warming weather here it is nearly time for us to move on again. We have been packing and organising things here in Thailand as well as checking arrangements for the coming months. You know that this is one of V's super-powers and we certainly both appreciate that and value the results!
In the coming weeks we will be passing through Holywood, Bangor and Belfast on our way to Palma de Mallorca - so do say Hello if you are nearby or want to meet and chat.
Interview of the week
I had caught up on most of my podcasts last weekend and then this one popped up. As one of my subscribers said: it does seem like Lex's time has come! This interview is fascinating and you should take time to listen to it. Listen too to Lex's introduction and his thoughts on the interview. Compare this discussion with any other politician that you will see on the mainstream propaganda channels. It is great that Lex makes this interview available in so many languages (and it is very well done). This counteracts the Curse of Babel.
This episode is available in English, Hindi, Russian (and soon other languages). Captions and voice-over audio tracks are provided (for the main episode video on YouTube) in English, Hindi, Russian, and the original mixed-language version, with subtitles available in your preferred language.

I recommend that you just start at the beginning and listen through it - you will learn a lot. Pretty much all of the topics below are fascinating to listen to. For example, Explaining India, Path to peace, Biggest democracy and Decision making process - but they are all good!

Around Bangkok this week
π οΈ Project Updates
This week I am back in Bitcoin projects again. First up is an excellent discussion hosted by Stephan on ZK Rollups. I follow that with an interesting read distinguishing Bitcoin as Money, not just currency - this may seem pedantic but it's not. I follow this up with a deeper dive into how Money has been captured and is used as a tool to manipulate humanity. I also give a gift to those of you who use Microsoft Office - you can thank me later. Lastly a testimonial on moving to GrapheneOS and a warning on how sophisticated Phishing attacks can be - do not get tricked.
Back to Bitcoin scaling
This is potentially another scaling mechanism for Bitcoin - you will be aware by now that scaling through layers is needed to give the transaction volumes that are to be expected over time. What is especially interesting with this is that ZK rollups are "battle-tested" technology and bringing this to Bitcoin does indeed offer more options for scaling and these will likely be "industrial strength" from early on.

After that, you should take a few minutes to read Parker's latest insights into the nature of Bitcoin and Money vs Currency. This may seem like a pedantic discussion but you will quickly see that it is highly relevant. Seeing this will also help you to recognise the madness of the EU and the lunatic plan of their convicted criminal head of ECB. Holders of Euros should certainly be giving this some serious thought.

Money vs Currency - this is not a pedantic distinction - it is the critical essence
You may or may not be ready for this

A gift for those who want to exit Microsoft
By now you ought to be aware that Microsoft may well be the most evil of all of the Big Tech Giants - or perhaps it is a tie with Google. For years now they have been transitioning their (bug-ridden) software to subscriptions and they work to lock you in with sunk costs.
Happily I stopped using all Microsoft products and services many years ago - they get nothing from me. Those of you who are stuck paying for Microsoft Office should seriously consider LibreOffice - it really is a complete alternative and provides a simple exit from Microsoft's evil grip.

The one part of Microsoft's offering that you might need still is syncing your files between your devices. The simplest and best option is SyncThing - we have discussed this before - it is bullet-proof, private, resilient and just works. We discussed it here. No need for any cloud services!
Laura explains - degoogling your phone
This is a great testimonial from a non-technical user about her experience of shifting to use GrapheneOS instead of Android. I agree with all that she says.

Yes - GrapheneOS is easy to install - the Web Installer takes you step by step.
Profiles - like having multiple phones but all on one device - they're great.
Battery Life - yes, you will have multi-day battery life it fast and snappy.
You do need the Google Camera to get all options - it can be in a separate profile
Naomi is also a fan - you can listen to her testimonial here - with lots of tips and tricks.
Stay informed - it's dangerous out there
It's dangerous out there. Using a password manager is something that everyone should be doing. KeepassXC and related clients are excellent self-sovereign options. Be aware that they are also now targets of sophisticated attacks. See below to understand how this works so that you can recognise and avoid it.

Polymorphic Chrome Extensions could hack your password manager by simply disabling it and presenting you with a similar login window, watch out for this new type of attack that leverages the extension toolbars appearance to trick you into giving hackers your passwords.
π Links for your edification
The following are links from my NetNewswire feeds - learn, enjoy and share.
The Enshitification is intentional
This is another great analysis by UE. You may have thought, or noticed that the quality of online services is decreasing and has been for quite some time. You are not imagining it. He cites clear examples where Amazon, Google and Facebook increasingly fail to meet expectations. He also explains the techniques they are using to obscure this from you and to pretend that it is not happening.

Yet another example. In February 2025, HP recently introduced a mandatory 15 minute wait into all phone calls to their support as a way to discourage you from calling them for help. In their online messages they are lying to you. ICYMI HP is another company you must never trust. Recall how they bricked thousands of printers worldwide and they did nothing to put this right or help those users - their solution is that you should just buy another printer.
Mozilla self immolates
Mozilla Foundation has f**ed up one time too many. Listen as Nick recounts the litany of disappointments and failures to meet reasonable expectations. Much as it hurts, I too feel they have violated trust too many times - it's time to move on.

For those of you who are fed up with Firefox and looking for alternatives, Henry has done a great job and tells you all about 8 alternatives that you might well want to consider.

00:54 LibreWolf, 02:22 Zen Browser, 04:15 Mullvad, 06:40 Tor Browser
09:20 Vivaldi Browser, 11:14 Ladybird, 12:26 Orion Browser, 14:14 Brave
16:12 So which should you pick?
DYOR and pick what works best for you - my recommendation goes to Orion (currently Mac/iOS only) and Brave (based on Chromium) - Mullvad (forked from Firefox) is also a solid choice. All of these work superbly and they give an exit from the Mozilla issues identified above. Tor Browser is for a whole category of services on its own - if you know, you know.
π€ Closing Thoughts
Back in Newsletter 150 we compared and contrasted Gnosticism and Hermeticism. Whilst, at first sight there might seem to be many differences, there are also many common threads. Many of the differences come around the "creation of the universe", for which definitive documentation is understandably hard to find. Intriguing as these things might well be, I would suggest that the other topics (on which they often agree) are much more relevant.
My intuition tells me to focus on the common threads and the useful parts that resonate with you. Focus on principles on which they are based and individual gnosis, study and discovery without yielding to man-made control structures.
ICYMI - this 30 minute video gives you an excellent summary to get you started and you can also download and listen to the Kybalion for free.

The Soul's Awakening
In related vein, Jason recently gave this straightforward and straight-talking presentation in which he cites and references dozens of academic and authoritative books, findings and assertions. I encourage you to watch and learn - and you likely should obtain your own copies of the books that he mentions and DYOR.
More straight talking from Jason - for those with eyes to see and ears to hear
For those of you who want to take their own research to the next level - go to Anna's Archive. This is the largest open library on the planet. It consolidates many other repositories (including archive.org and libgen.rs) into one searchable archive. You will likely want to subscribe and support this initiative - this is also possible with Bitcoin and Monero and all of this can be accessed using Tor browser.

Help yourself, or don't - you decide
I realise that some (many?) will find this a step too far. So be it - you can come back when you are ready. For those who are awakening or motivated to to help themselves be happier, more fulfilled and more successful I suggest that you do watch and internalise this next one.

With hindsight, this is obvious and apparent - it is only looking forward that you doubt it or cannot see it. Back in my professional days I undertook many high profile and challenging projects. In every one of these I only imagined myself being successful and delivering the required result. This also echoes what we discussed in "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" - where "all things are created twice", once in your visualisation and once in "real life".
