Steven A Young presents “the ether conspiracy” as central to his wider attempt to connect modern synthetic science with ancient natural science. He begins with the Tay Road Bridge between Newport and Dundee, interpreting it as a symbol of his role as a bridge. Dundee, on the built-up side, represents temporary, artificial, fragmented and mechanistic constructions, while the natural side represents what is innate, holistic, living and God-made. He frames the lecture through this opposition: synthetic knowledge is quantitative and imposed, whereas natural or alchemical knowledge is qualitative and revealed.

Young describes the ether, also called aether, quintessence or the fifth element, as an idea known to sages, natural philosophers and alchemists before the twentieth century. He lists names including Spiritus Mundi, Astral Light, Universal Medium, prima materia, Anima Mundi, Iliaster, philosophical mercury, Akasha, prana, chi, ruach, orgone, mana and Manitou. Across these traditions, he interprets the ether as an omnipresent, living fabric that fills space, penetrates matter and carries light, force, sympathy and influence. It is presented as the bridge between spirit and matter, creator and creation, and humanity and God, rather than as merely a discarded physical hypothesis.

The historical centre of the lecture is the 1887 Michelson–Morley experiment. Young explains that its interferometer divided a light beam along perpendicular paths to search for a difference caused by the Earth’s presumed motion through a stationary ether. The expected fringe shift was not observed at the predicted magnitude, and the outcome became known as a null result. Young argues that the measured effect was not literally zero but much smaller than anticipated, and he rejects the conclusion that this invalidated the ether. He portrays the experiment as the decisive moment when physics retained heliocentric assumptions while replacing the ether with Einstein’s special relativity theory.

Young then contrasts this work with Dayton Miller’s ether-drift experiments. He says Miller built a larger, more sensitive interferometer, worked both near sea level and at Mount Wilson, gathered more than 200,000 readings, completed more than 12,000 turns, tested at different times and seasons, and organised observations by sidereal time. According to Young, Miller also attempted to control temperature, pressure and magnetic interference, while obtaining consistent positive results. Young emphasises that Michelson and Morley worked for only a few days in a stone basement, whereas Miller continued for decades and used a more open setting at altitude. He recounts Miller’s later isolation, Robert Shankland’s posthumous critique, and Einstein’s stated concern that a confirmed positive result would undermine relativity. Young interprets this history as suppression.

The lecture places the ether within an older scientific tradition. Young cites Descartes’s full plenum and vortices, Huygens’s wave theory of light, Fresnel’s ether drag, Maxwell’s electromagnetic waves, Kelvin’s defence of ether and Faraday’s field lines. He describes Descartes’s cosmos as completely full of subtle matter, with planets carried by etheric vortices and gravity associated with local vortex motion. He also invokes alchemical writings attributed to Hermes Trismegistus, Paracelsus, Isaac Newton, Robert Fludd and Jakob Böhme. Their quoted language presents invisible spirit, celestial influence, ethereal vapours, heavenly substance and living water as links between visible creation and an invisible spiritual world. Young uses these passages to support his claim that space is full rather than empty and fundamentally alive throughout.

Young argues that abandoning the ether created what he calls the “photon fallacy”. Because Thomas Young’s double-slit experiment showed light producing an interference pattern, he maintains that light is a wave requiring a medium. He therefore describes photons as hypothetical particles contrived to let light cross a vacuum. In his account, wave-particle duality, time dilation, length contraction, spacetime, quantum entanglement, the cosmological constant, dark matter and unified-field theories arose from removing the ether. He interprets spacetime as the geometry of a vortex retained after its medium was denied. He further suggests that modern terms such as vacuum state, zero-point field, Higgs field, dark energy, quantum foam, inflaton field and superfluid vacuum resemble renamed forms of ether. Einstein’s later statement that space without ether is unthinkable is presented as especially significant.

A broader contrast follows between alchemy and “scientism”. Young defines scientism as literal adherence to modern scientific dogma, institutional consensus and authoritative figures, coupled with materialism, distrust of direct perception and dismissal of religion and ancient knowledge. In his comparison, alchemy begins from “all is mind”, regards the cosmos as living and ensouled, treats consciousness as fundamental, and sees humanity as a microcosm. Scientism instead begins from matter, presents the cosmos as mechanical, explains consciousness through the brain, and depicts humanity as an evolved ape or biochemical machine. Alchemy seeks collaboration with nature, bodily purification, transmutation and inner transformation; scientism seeks technological dominion, attacks disease materially, and considers transmutation impossible or uneconomical. The ether embodies this divide.

In the final sections, Young describes matter as ether thickened successively into air, water and earth. He uses fluid vortices and Kelvin’s vortex atom theory to suggest that stable knots in a low-viscosity ether could form substances. He contrasts this living, infinitely divisible medium with atomic theory, and interprets the atom as an idol that conceals transmutation. He associates the six-pointed star with the four elements, snowflakes, the Iliaster and ether symbolism. He also links ether with atmospheric electricity and proposes that elevated structures could collect “free energy”, while suggesting its suppression helps preserve labour and control. His numerological discussion favours the spelling “ether” and connects it with the number 28, bodily structures and lunar light. Finally, he maps personal ordeals onto fire, earth, air and water, presents an invocation to the hidden medium, and closes with an artwork showing academics drawing a veil of equations over alchemical knowledge while ordinary people reach towards it. The image summarises his view that modern theory hides reality.

Overall assessment

The lecture is most effective as a statement of Young’s spiritual and alchemical worldview. Its strongest features are:
